Verizon's Pre Plus And Pixi Plus Specs

Sphere: Related Content

Looks like Verizon is still set to offer Palm's only WebOS devices as the Pre Plus & Pixi Plus. There maybe an announcement made at CES on the matter. According to the spec sheet, the only changes are that the Pre Plus will get its internal storage bumped up to 16GB and the Pixi Plus will get Wi-Fi support enabled. I personally welcome WebOS to Big Red.

Sphere: Related Content
As CES continues, a crap load of announces are coming out by different carriers, new tablets, new phones, and (of course) new technology. AT&T has been focused on their cash cow, the iPhone, it seemed like they were never gonn a get anything ground-breaking again. That still has yet to be remained seen. However they have announced that they are ready to play nice with Android with 3 up and coming devices which are listed below:
  • A Motorola smartphone, powered by MOTOBLUR, with a unique form factor and an AT&T exclusive (sounds like the Backflip/Motus)
  • Dell’s first smartphone, based on the Android platform and an AT&T exclusive (confirmed as the Dell Mini 3)
  • A HTC smartphone, based on the Android platform, and an AT&T exclusive
No word on what HTC device they might get but speculation is accepted in the comments area. Hit the link below for the official release.

Nexus One Pricing Info For Current T-Mobile Customers

Sphere: Related Content

Below is a more detailed breakdown of the Nexus One pricing for current T-Mobile customers. From what I hear T-Mobile has very little pull with bending on the pricing. Purchasing straight through Google themselves obviously has its downs. To truly qualify for the lovely $179 pricing, you have to be a new T-Mobile customer. Below shows where everyone who is already a T-Mo customer stands.
  • Nexus One without service: $529
  • Nexus One with new, 2-year T-Mobile US service plan for new customers: $179
  • Nexus One with new, 2-year T-Mobile US service plan for qualifying existing T-Mobile customers who are adding data plans: $279
  • Nexus One with new, 2-year T-Mobile US service plan for qualifying existing T-Mobile customers who are upgrading their data plans: $379
Gee, thanks a lot Google.

The Skiff Reader: E-Book Reader Coming To Sprint

Sphere: Related Content
Introducing the biggest and thinnest e-book reader heading to the stores ... the Skiff Reader. The Skiff Reader comes in with an 11.5 inch "metal foil", bendable, durable, touchscreen with a 1600 x 1200 screen resolution. The Skiff Reader also connects via Wi-Fi and Sprint's 3G network. Should be unveiled at the CES Show but no word as of yet on pricing and release date. Read below to check out the press release.

NEW YORK, January 4th, 2010 - Skiff, LLC and Sprint (NYSE: S) today announced that they will preview the Skiff Reader, the first e-reader optimized for newspaper and magazine content, at the 2010 International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas later this week.

The Skiff Reader, the initial dedicated device to integrate the upcoming Skiff e-reading service, is remarkably sleek and easy to use. At just over a quarter-inch in overall height, the device is the thinnest e-reader announced to date. It features the largest and highest-resolution electronic-paper display yet unveiled in a consumer device, at 11.5" in size (measured diagonally) and a resolution of 1600 x 1200 pixels (UXGA). A full touchscreen enables users to intuitively navigate and engage with the newspapers, magazines, books and other digital content they purchase through the Skiff Store, as well as personal and work documents. The device weighs just over one pound and lasts over a week of average use between charges.

"The Skiff Reader's big screen will showcase print media in compelling new ways," said Gilbert Fuchsberg, president of Skiff, LLC. "This is consistent with Skiff's focus on delivering enhanced reading experiences that engage consumers, publishers and advertisers."

The Skiff Reader is designed not just for sleekness but also for durability. It is the first consumer product to feature the next-generation of e-paper display – one based on a thin, flexible sheet of stainless-steel foil. This contrasts with the fragile glass that is the foundation of almost every electronic screen – and a primary source of vulnerability and breakage risk in the devices that incorporate them. Skiff has worked closely with LG Display (NYSE: LPL), one of the world's leading display manufacturers and the innovator of the foil-display technology, to optimize and implement this first-of-its-kind non-glass display uniquely for the Skiff Reader.

Skiff has signed a multi-year agreement with Sprint (NYSE:S) to provide 3G connectivity for Skiff's dedicated e-reading devices in the United States. Plans are underway to have the Skiff Reader available for purchase later this year in more than 1,000 Sprint retail locations across the U.S., as well as online at www.sprint.com. Availability, pricing, additional distribution channels and other details will be disclosed at a later date.

"The forthcoming launch of the Skiff Reader is an exciting development for consumers who are looking for more and more choice in the arena of embedded devices," said Dan Dooley, president wholesale solutions, Sprint. "We have witnessed a strong demand for e-readers in recent years and now Sprint is showing its commitment to Skiff by making this new device available on the 3G network and for sale in Sprint retail stores."

In October 2009, Sprint announced the formation of its Emerging Solutions Business that focuses exclusively on the rapid delivery of machine-to-machine and mobile computing solutions to businesses and consumers. Sprint's partnership with Skiff builds on more than 10 years of experience in working with vendors to provision non-Sprint-branded devices to operate on its networks, as well as extensive expertise in operating multiple platforms and assets.

In addition to 3G, the Skiff Reader will also support wireless connectivity via WiFi.

The Skiff Reader will feature the Skiff service and digital store, allowing consumers to wirelessly purchase and access a wide variety of newspapers, magazines, books, blogs and other content from multiple publishers. Newspaper and magazine content delivered by Skiff will feature visually appealing layouts, high-resolution graphics, rich typography and dynamic updates, supporting key design qualities that help publications differentiate themselves and attract subscribers and advertisers.

Besides the Skiff Reader, Skiff is working with major consumer electronics manufacturers to integrate Skiff's service, digital store and client software into a range of innovative devices. By supporting a variety of devices from multiple manufacturers, and through complementary applications for major smart phone platforms, Skiff will make it easier for publishers to distribute content and advertising across a range of devices and form factors, an increasingly important goal as the e-reading market continues to grow.

Rumor: Looks Like 2010 Is Gonna Be The Year Of The Tablet

Sphere: Related Content

*pic courtesy of Gizmodo*

Rumors have been buzzing about Apple's up & coming tablet making its way to the stores and now HTC/Google have entered the tablet business as well (both allegedly). Apple's tablet is said to be a 7 inch multi-touch device (dubbed the iSlate) that could stream TV, music, movies, etc via iTunes as well as browse the net and an e-book reader of sorts all to be priced under $1000 (Nice!) with a January 26th announcement/release date.
HTC is said to be teaming up with Google to prep a Chrome OS tablet which would provide a quicker, cleaner, and cheaper to access the internet. It is also said that HTC has been working with Google for the past 18 months on several tablet prototypes using new Qualcomm processors and Adobe software. More info on the HTC/Google tablet maybe released during this year's CES Show. Although I'd love to get the Apple tablet, I'd honestly would only be able to afford the HTC/Google one.

The first Decade of the 21st Century GONE!

Sphere: Related Content

Well, Happy New Years to all of our faithful followers and those that just stopped by for the first time. Here at TechGuySmartBuy we are awaiting the newest technology to come to really propel us into the 21st Century. We have all been anxiously waiting for our chance to Zip! Zoom! Fly! like the Jetsons. Where are the flying cars?

With such expectations for the 21st Century where do we match up for where we currently are? We were told there would be computers that you can carry around in the palm of your hand. We have smartphones that are doing way more than we ever expected from any of our computers that we were working with 10 to 20 years ago.

So can the wave of the future with flying cars still be that far off? I say let's build back up the auto manufacturers basic components and deliver quality vehicles without the economic stronghold that they have on all of us. Then, we can see more of our technologically savvy race continue to move towards a gravity free space aged world.

Well please stay tuned to us thru the begining of this new year and decade and let's embrace where we are going with this.....to boldly go where man dares to take us. While we wait to see, take a look at what may be our first actual flying car, made by the good people at Moller International.

Engadget's View On 10 Years Of BlackBerry

Sphere: Related Content

I had to talk about and put a link up to a very well written editorial piece by Chris Ziegler on the 10 year history of BlackBerry devices. Although my 1st BlackBerry device was the Curve 8320 for T-Mobile, I remember seeing the 950 (email only device) being sold in Office Depot back in 1999 to now the BlackBerry Bold 9700. As I still have a BlackBerry Curve 8900 (soon to be Bold 9700) as my primary everything device it was good to read the history of the greatest thing from Canada (along with Melissa Ford). Hit the link below to educate yourself on where RIM came from, to where it is now. Enjoy!!

Leaked Nexus One Pricing Details

Sphere: Related Content

Gizmodo has been fed the details everyone has been waiting for, the Nexus One pricing. You can buy the phone full retail at $530 or for $180 w/ a new 2yr T-Mobile plan ( a 500 minute plan, details below). If you decide to cancel your Nexus One plan before 120 days, you owe the remaining $350 or you can return the device to Google. We shall see shortly if this is an actually Droid-killer as Gizmodo previously stated. In 7 days we shall see what is the truth.

• Yeah, it's $530 unsubsidized. Google's not going to be selling the phone at cost, like so many people considered. They're not going to save us from the "making money off of hardware" culture we've got right now, so this is basically just another Android handset, albeit a really good one
• If you want it subsidized, you'll have to sign up for a 2 year mandatory contract and pay $180 for the phone
• There's only one rate plan: $39.99 Even More + Text + Web for $79.99 total
• Existing customers cannot keep their plan if they want a subsidized phone; they have to change to the one plan, and this only applies to accounts with one single line
• If that doesn't fly with you, you have to buy the $530 unlocked version—this actually might save you money over two years if you already have a cheap plan
• Family plans, Flexpay, SmartAccess and KidConnect subscribers must buy the phone unlocked and unsubsidized for $530
• You can only buy five Nexus One phones per Google account
• There is language in the agreement of shipping outside the US
• Google will sell it at google.com/phone, which explains what they were doing with that page a few weeks ago
• Google will still call it the Nexus One apparently, and not the Google Phone
